JP Dunn Construction proudly delivered another outstanding project at Harwell Campus for Kier Construction – marking our second successful collaboration on site following the completion of Project Dexter.
Our team executed a comprehensive substructure package, including:
Pile mats
Pile caps
Ground beams
Extensive underground drainage
Three large cellular attenuation tanks
The superstructure consisted of two blocks, each featuring:
A three-storey reinforced concrete (RC) frame
Two stair/lift cores
Approximate footprint of 1,500 square metres
To accelerate the build programme and optimise floor cycle times, we implemented Bamtec reinforcement – an advanced, prefabricated reinforcement system. Delivered in rolls and installed using a tower crane, Bamtec mats were efficiently unrolled by our skilled steel fixers onto concrete spacers. This significantly enhanced productivity compared to traditional rebar methods.
Achieving high-quality finishes was critical on this project. Notable elements included:
Exposed concrete columns and lift core walls, formed using enhanced MDO plywood for a smooth ‘Plain’ finish
Precast stairs and landings, installed progressively within the cores
Invisible bolt connections, eliminating the need for unsightly steel angles and ensuring a clean, seamless aesthetic
Our commitment to quality was formally recognised with a Quality Award, celebrating both our rigorous quality control processes and detailed project documentation.
“As the Project Manager for Kier, I was initially apprehensive about executing the groundworks and RC frame during the challenging autumn and winter months.
From the very beginning, we agreed to implement a six-day working week in collaboration with Dunns – a decision that proved invaluable to the project’s success.
Having spent many years in the industry, I can confidently say it has been an absolute pleasure working with the Dunns team. Their dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment throughout made a lasting impression.”
