About the role

This apprenticeship is for people who want to gain an academic qualification in formwork, while
gaining professional experience.

Formwork carpenters shape wood, metal and other materials, which become moulds into
which concrete or similar materials are poured to form a structure. This could be used to create
anything from constructing foundations to a staircase or bridge. You’ll learn all the basic skills
and knowledge you need to work in the construction industry and achieve a diploma in
formwork carpentry.

The academic course will be over a two years period into day release (1 day / week). This course
will be held at The Skills Centre Stratford. The company will cover all costs of transport to and
from college, and college fees.
In between this formal training you will be mentored on one of our sites by an experienced
carpenter.

The course at The Skills Centre includes practical training in the following:

  • Interpreting diagrams and technical drawings
  • Principles of setting out
  • Fabricate and repair: wooden and system formwork
  • Erect and strike: wooden and system formwork
  • Erect and strike: crane handled formwork
  • Concrete (mixes, volumes and placing).

You’ll also learn all the basic skills and knowledge including:

  • Interpreting information
  • Estimating resources
  • Basic building methods
  • Building elements
  • Building materials

You’ll also gain competence in:

  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Health and safety
  • Drug and alcohol awareness
  • Mobile towers
  • Safe use of ladders
  • Manual handling
  • Safe use of small tools and equipment

At the end of your apprenticeship you will have the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Construction Diploma in Formwork
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Formwork Operations
  • Level 2 Functional Skills (Maths and English)
  • Personal learning and thinking skills

 

Candidate requirements

No formal requirements, but it’s useful to have GCSE grades A*-C in English, Maths and
Technology.
You must have the following abilities:

  • Communication skills
  • Problem solving attitude
  • Creativity
  • Head for heights
  • Physical fitness
